Sustainable investing, SRI, and talking points

This section is meant to help you better understand your investing in general and related trends. Ideally you might even be better able to explain it to your friends, family, and colleagues!

The "Move Your Money" campaign is a new movement started by a group of friends over dinner urging citizens to move their money from the big four "Too Big to Fail" banks to smaller local community banks and credit unions. Check out their 4 minute video below illuminating the striking similarities between the current banking crisis and the timeless storyline of "It's a Wonderful Life."

WAMU public radio's The Kojo Nnamdi April 2009 show on socially responsible investing:
http://wamu.org/programs/kn/09/04/22.php#25423 For decades, ethical investing meant shunning "sin stocks" like tobacco and gun-makers. Today, it also means going green--buying into companies atuned to climate change. But the question remains: does conscience interfere with profit? Kojo examines socially responsible investing in this era of economic collapse. Guests: Barbara Krumsiek, President and CEO, Calvert Group; Pietra Rivoli, Professor of Finance and International Business, McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University; and Author, “The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy: An Economist Examines the Markets, Power, and Politics of World Trade” (Wiley)

The United Nations’ Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) signatories represent assets approaching $10 trillion. With signatories from more than 200 investment organizations in 25 countries, the appeal is clear and compelling. But are the Principles driving real change? The UNPRI’s Working Capital Report (July 2007), and the report from the UNPRI’s Awareness to Action Roundtable (October 2007) provide answers to this question. Both offer evidence that incorporating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria into investment practices has motivated companies worldwide to embrace ESG reporting, analysis, and policies.

We modern mopes, on the other hand, must consider not only our too, too solid flesh but also our online infinitude..." continues in article titled, "Lifesavers" of March 2010 Wired Magazine.
